Parents ask me what their child should know before preschool and they almost always mean letters. Letters are the least of it.

What I noticed, year after year, was smaller and more practical. Who could manage their own coat. Who could work a zip without help. Who could stay with something difficult for four minutes instead of walking away at the first snag.

Those children had an easier September. Not because they were brighter, but because they spent less of the day waiting for an adult to do something for them.

None of it needs a workbook. It needs things with real fastenings on them, and enough repetition that the child stops needing you.

Six that do the job, in the order I would buy them.

A child who can undo their own buckle is not smarter than the others. They have just done it four hundred times.

Why It Is First
Every fastening on it is one the child will meet on their own clothes. A zip on a board is the same motion as the zip on a coat, and the coat is the thing standing between them and the playground.
What A Teacher Notices
Not that they know what a buckle is. That they will stay with one for six minutes without asking for help, which is the actual skill.

Why It Made The List
Building something that falls over is a small lesson in starting again. I have watched a great many three year olds learn to shrug at a fallen tower, and the ones who can are easier on themselves all year.

One Last Thing Before Term Starts

None of this is about getting ahead. A child who cannot yet do their own coat is not behind. They have simply not had four hundred goes at it yet.

That is all any of these are for. Enough repetitions, done by the child rather than for them, that the fastening stops being a thing they need an adult for.
